Banksy work in Soho removed

4 04 2009

Last August (was it that long ago?) I wrote a post about a couple of Banksy’s works in Central London, the main one being the huge ‘One Nation Under CCTV’ mural that appeared overnight in Soho (just off Oxford St).

Well, for some time Westminster Council has been threatening to remove the mural by painting over it, classifying it as graffiti reather than as street art. And I noticed this week that they’ve actually gone ahead and done just that (at the same time as the G20 protests … hmm, coincidence that something else was the main focus of the media and the vocal minority?)

So now all that’s left is photos of the very timely work. I’m just glad I took my photos when I did.

Snow in London

2 02 2009

London’s currently enjoying a ‘Russian period’, and we’re enjoying (well, some of us are) the results of a little bit of hijacked Russian winter weather. So just when I thought I’d probably seen the last of ‘my’ snow of the winter, a whole lot has come to visit me :)

These photos are from last night, Sunday 1 February.

Dubai – Vegas in the East

15 09 2008
We were in Dubai for a long weekend in early June with a view to potentially moving there … this was the view from the hotel bar’s patio; the lights are a bit more diffuse than normal, as we were there during a sand storm.

Lille – a late summer weekend

15 09 2008
I took myself to Lille on one of the May long weekends on a self-commissioned ‘photo assignment’ (well, to give myself a chance to become more familiar with my camera, while also exploring someplace new!). Lille proved a fun excursion …

Kaiser Wilhelm Gedaechtniskirche

16 08 2008
Modern-day Berlin as a city is one that hides most of it’s recent history well – much of the damage that’s left from WWII has been preserved, rather than ignored. However, so much of the damage from the war and the partition of the city, that’s what’s left forms incredibly poignant memorials.

These are my photos of the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedaechtniskirche – what was the city’s main cathedral before the war, and is now Berlin’s most moving monument to the distructiveness of war.
